Sulabha Deshpande was one of the known faces of Indian theatre and cinema. In her long career she acted in many Hindi and Marathi movies. Apart from movies and theatres she also acted in numerous TV serials. Recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, she will be best remembered for her roles in Bhumika (1977), Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan (1978) and Gaman (1978).
Born and brought up in Mumbai, Sulabha Deshpande was married to noted theatre actor-director, Arvind Deshpande, who died in 1987. She started her career in theatre by directing plays for the students of Chhabildas Girl’s High School. Deshpande soon joined the group Rangayan, which was founded by Vijaya Mehta, Vijay Tendulkar, Arvind Deshpande and Shriram Lagoo. Her contribution to theatre remains of paramount importance. She acted in numerous plays like Madhlya Bhintee, Sasaa Ani Kasav, Shantata! Court Chalu Ahe playing memorable roles. She alongwith her husband Arvind Deshpande and Arun Kakade formed the theatre group, Awishkar in 1971.
In her long career she acted in over 73 mainstream Bollywood movies. As a character actor she is best remembered for her roles in Bhumika (1977), Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan (1978) and Gaman (1978). Recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, she was equally comfortable with Hindi and Maratahi movies and plays. In the later par life she acted in scores of television serials like Jee Ley Zara, Ek Packet Umeed, Asmita and many others.
Illness and Death
Sulabha Deshpande died on 4 June 2016 (aged 78–79) after prolonged illness. She was cremated at Shivaji Park crematorium in Dadar.
Many prominent personalities of Bollywood like Lata Mangeshkar, Rishi Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Riteish Deshmukh expressed their grief over her demise.
